Rachael Garvey: The Makings of a Star

Up and coming singer/songwriter, Rachael Garvey, talks her biggest inspirations and what gave her the final push to indulge into music full time.
Rachael would describe her music as “stripped back indie.” She continued to say that her sound has an acoustic and singer/songwriter feel but also aims to be chilled out and personal with her music.

She talks about how her parents were the ones who originally got her into music, basically raising her with it. “[Music] was just always on around the house when I was a kid,” she says. If it wasn’t her parents playing old rock and roll, then it was her sister blasting R&B. Rachael couldn’t escape music so instead embraced it.

Her dad’s talent with a guitar also inspired her to take more of an interest in music but, ultimately, picking up an instrument herself was completely her own choice. She started learning with a ukulele and then picking up a bit of knowledge of the keyboard at school. Once she had outgrown her uke, she asked her parents for a guitar and the rest is, as they say, history.

Because of her family’s input, music has all she’s ever known. She is completely in love music and you can see that from the light in her eyes when she’s talking about it. It truly is her passion. Not to mention, how fun she thought it looked to be constantly around music.

Rachael took the leap in 2017 and started study music full time. Rachael says how she wanted a change from the same group of people she had always been with and wanted to put herself out of her comfort zone and try something new. “I just figured that if I didn't at least try then I would never know if it [a career in music] would have happened,” she says when talking about making the switch from media to music.

Not too long before enrolling in her music course, Rachael had her first gig at a little pub in her hometown and brought all her friends and family to watch. When looking back to that gig, Rachael shares how extremely nervous she was and how she wishes she had just gone for it. “Don’t hesitate,” she said talking to her past self. She told herself “to just be chill because there are people watching that will really like you.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom looking back though, as she thought it went quite well for a first gig.

Before taking her music career more seriously, Rachael used to upload covers to YouTube as a hobby. Although she only had a small following, she shared that is was nice to know people were listening to her sing and enjoying it. It gave her more confidence when it came to performing and lead her to audition for the college place she has now.

Rachael’s biggest musical inspiration is the guitarist and singer/songwriter, George Harrison. More recently, artists like Matt DiMarco and Rex Orange County have been a big influence on Garvey. However, the biggest musical influence on her has to be The Beatles. Although Rachael is only 17, she is a huge Beatles fan. She even has a Beatles badge on her denim jacket. Outside of music, Rachael mentioned her late granddad who has been a huge influence on her life as a whole.

When asked about her dream collab, Rachael was originally taken back as she started to think of artists but as soon as I said the artist could be alive or dead she blurted out John Lennon, saying that a collaboration with him would be a dream. Careful Rachael, you’re showing your fangirl side again. After a bit more thought, Rachael said that an alive artist she’d love to collab with is the indie artist, George Ezra.

Rachael talks about her struggle when it comes to writing new music. It often takes her quite a long time because she gets writer block a lot. But when she does write, she likes to write about people. Whether that’s real people in her life or just characters she has made up. When I asked if she takes inspirations from her real life she said that she subconsciously does. Rachael will often write music about fictional situations only to realise later that has actually happened to her before. Ultimately though, she tries to tell stories with her music.

While her debut EP may not be in the horisons just yet, Rachael is certainly going to keep writing and creating new music, that will be available on Rachael’s YouTube channel.
When it comes to any upcoming gigs, Rachael is going to be involved in a lot of concerts presented by her college, Access.
