Netflix's YOU | Review
This awfully named show does not give credit to the crazy story it takes you on. You will not be able to look away.
You is the next big thing on Netflix. It is based on Caroline Kepnes' creepy novel and stars Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as the not so reliable narrator. His character is completely in love with Once Upon a Time's Elizabeth Lail but you soon realise it's more of an obsession. This show is about stalkers, infatuation, masks, and how far some are willing to go to control their lives and others.
I wouldn't call this a good show but it's something you can't look away from, even when the next act is so predictable. It has a way of pulling you in and you'll find yourself hating it for doing so.
There is not a single likeable character in the whole show and each has an unsettling vibe. You're not rooting for anyone and you have no real investment but you find yourself needing to needing to know what happens to them.
You has an interesting plot but the actual script is lacking. The dialogue is meant to make you uncomfortable but instead comes out cringy and laughable. It tells you, rather than shows.
At times, it felt like the dialogue and story had just been sprinkled in around the many, many sex scenes (Warning: watch with headphones and not with parents).
I found myself thinking "why am I still watching this?" And then continued to click 'Next Episode'. The story is so ridiculous but also so compelling that no matter what I thought of the show, I had to keep watching. It has an incredibly binge-worthy quality but not many likeable ones.
