The Unbelievable Gwenpool (Vol.1) | Review

What started off as a simple variant cover mashing the ever so popular Spider-Gwen and Deadpool whirlwind into a unique and totally fun new series starring the UNBELIEVABLE GWENPOOL!

If you thought Deadpool constantly breaking the fourth-wall was fun, then you're in for a treat with this story.

We follow superhero fan Gwen Poole (see what they did there?) from our world who is unexpectedly thrown into the comic books she loves to read so much. And what would any superhero fan do in a world full of super-powered people? Attempt to become a hero, of course, but that’s not so easy when you’re just an ordinary person.

Gwen is in a unique position in this story. While she may not have special training, powers, or anything to warrant her being a superhero, she knows she is in her own comic book. She is more than aware that the world surrounding her isn’t actually real and therefore actions don’t have consequences. However, she soon learns that it’s more complicated than that because while this world may be fictional to her, it isn’t for the characters living there.

Throughout this story, we build a relationship with Gwen who knows we’re reading and talks to us. She gives the readers a great commentary on the Marvel world and doesn’t hold back.

We get to see Gwen fangirl over some guest stars in this and accidentally reveal a secret identity or two. Which I guess is her superpower, she knows everyone's secrets but sounds crazy trying to explain why.

Gwenpool is a different kind of hero story. While ultimately, she does want to do good, she also wants the limelight. She wants so desperately to be like the heroes she loves but doesn't go about it in the same way. It can be hard not to hurt people when you don’t think any of them are real.
