IT: Chapter 1 | Film Review

Stephan King has ruined clowns for yet another generation.

Pennywise the dancing clown has escaped the pages of everyone’s favourite novel in this 2017 live-action adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller, IT. It’s all of your childhood fear realised on the big screen.

IT (2017) follows the story for 7 young ‘losers’ who face bullying and torment in every aspect of their lives and things only get worse when young Georgie is declared missing.

When you’re a child you’re scared of everyone, especially things that aren’t there. Now imagine that just this once, that the figure in the dark was real but no matter your pleading, the adults around you just didn’t believe you. The people who are supposed to keep you safe don’t and you’re left to fend for yourself.

That feeling of isolation and pure fear is the core of this film.

However, it’s also able to grab at your heart-strings with its focus on childhood friendships. It takes you back to the woes and excitement of being young and feeling like you can single-handedly change the world.

The chemistry the young actors have together is something rare. If you tried to replicate this film with the same script and different actors, it would have a completely different outcome.

Sophia Lillis, who played Beverly Marsh, was without a doubt the standout actor. While only being a side character, she was able to convey such deep emotion and give you a look into the character past without the film needing to explicitly explain it.

IT (2017) isn’t just for horror fans, it’s accessible to all moviegoers with elements that anyone can love and relate to. While you may need to hide behind your hands for moments, this is a new classic that we’ll be watching for years to come.
