Best Films of 2018

2018 brought the height of superhero films, soppy YA, franchise after franchise, and horror showing that it's here to stay.

Here are my top picks of films from the past year.

Love, Simon
The Love, Simon book was phenomenal. Although the film didn’t quite have the same mystery to the story than the book, it definitely brought something new. This is a coming of age film that really knew its audience and what it is like to be a teenager with the feeling of the whole world on your shoulders. And while the film is partly about Simon’s sexuality and his coming out, that isn’t his whole arc. It’s just a small part of a larger story.

Bohemian Rhapsody
You don't need to be a fan of Queen to enjoy this film because it just draws you in. The casting is absolutely fantastic, you forget you're even watching actors and instead feels like you watching a piece of history. (Although, it was weird to see Peter Beale from Eastenders in this.) This film is incredible, heartbreaking, and doesn't have a single boring beat.

Christopher Robin
This film will take your childhood and stomp all over it. It will both ruin you and warm your heart. The performances of Hayley Atwell and Euan McGregor combined with everyone's favourite bear come to life leaves us with a magical story that even the grumpiest of people can enjoy.

Spider-Verse
Spider-Man's back again but it's not the same old story we all know. It was a refreshing film in this age of superheroes. The winning element was, of course, the animation. It blew me away and honestly felt like a comic book come to life. Into The Spider-Verse truly shares what it means to be the web-slinger and reminded me why I fell in love with him and his world all those years ago.

The honourable mentions of 2018 go to the films that made me laugh and cry:
